# Data for: Pollination limitation and post-fertilization constraints drive reproductive failure in wild Amazonian cacao ## 1. Description This dataset contains the raw and processed data used in the manuscript "Pollination limitation and post-fertilization constraints drive reproductive failure in wild Amazonian cacao". The study investigates the reproductive ecology of wild cacao (*Theobroma cacao*) in the Amazon, comparing two contrasting environments: **Forest (CP - Control Pollination / Open Pollination)** and **Agroforestry Systems (AFS - NP - Natural Pollination)**. The dataset includes individual flower-level monitoring, fruit development over 120 days, seed and fruit biometrics, and aggregated counts of reproductive success. ## 2. Files The dataset is organized into four main data files, numbered in the logical order of the experimental workflow (from raw field records to consolidated summaries). * **`01_reproductive_success_raw.csv`** Contains the individual reproductive success of 6,000 monitored flowers. *Columns:* flower ID, processing_date, local, responsible, plantation_type, period, treatment (SP, NP, CP), abortion, fruiting_date, date_after_40_days, fruits_after_40_days, date_after_120_days, fruits_after_120_days. * **`02_fruit_monitoring_120d.csv`** Aggregated counts of fruit initiation and retention at 40 and 120 days post-pollination treatments, per environment (FL-1, FL-2, AFS-1 to AFS-6). *Columns:* Environment, n_flowers, Initial fruiting (SP, NP, CP), Fruiting after 40 days (SP, NP, CP), Fruiting after 120 days (SP, NP, CP). * **`03_fruit_and_seed_biometry.csv`** Individual fruit measurements (weight, seed number, seed weight) collected at harvest (120 days post-treatment). *Columns:* Nº, date, site, responsible, plantation_type, treatment (CP, NP, SP), fruit_weight(g), n_seeds, seed_weight(g). * **`04_mature_fruits_sorting_summary.csv`** Summary statistics of mature fruits collected 120 days after pollination treatments, aggregated by environment. *Columns:* Environment, n_plants, fruit_weight(g), seed_weight(g), n_seeds. ## 3. Methodology Summary * **Study Site:** [Insert your site name/location here]* **Pollination Treatments:** * **CP (Control Pollination / Cross Pollination):** Manual pollination (Control). * **NP (Natural Pollination):** Flowers left open to natural pollinators (exclusion treatment to assess pollination limitation). * **SP (Spontaneous Pollination):** Flowers left untreated (control for natural abortion).* **Monitoring Period:** [Insert dates, e.g., November 2024 to April 2025].* **Key Metric:** Pollination Limitation (PL) calculated as `PL = 1 - (NP / CP)` based on fruit set at 120 days [Larson & Barrett 2000]. ## 4. Associated Manuscript This dataset is the supplementary data for the manuscript submitted to **Ecological Applications**. * **Authors:** [List authors here]* **Title:** Pollination limitation and post-fertilization constraints drive reproductive failure in wild Amazonian cacao.* **Journal:** Ecological Applications (under review). ## 5.
