Characteristics of Parbatsar breed of goat from Rajasthan desert [India]

Parbastar goat has light brown to dark chocolate body. The hair cover on the body is short, smooth and shiny giving a fine texture. The female kids attained sexual maturity at 8--10 months, thus dropping kids at the age of 14--15 months. Male kids eject good-quality semen at the age of 8--10 months. Postpartum oestrous interval is long, hence they kid once in a year producing 1 kid at a time. The kidding and twinning percentages were 87.50 and 4.63 respectively. The average lactational yield was 131-93 + - 11.321 litres in a lactation period of 180 days with 5% fat. This goat is very hardy and is capable of withstanding the common hazards of desert living, viz, high ambient temperature, low foraging material and scarcity of drinking water
