The purpose of this research is to answer the following question: How do cocoa agroforestry systems contribute to the sustainable livelihoods of four farming families in the municipality of Arauquita, department of Arauca, in the region of El Troncal? El Troncal is known as the cocoa town and it is said that when you arrive in El Troncal the impression is of chocolate, that from the houses and their warehouses emanates the smell of fine cocoa flavor and aroma and in its streets the inhabitants and tourists only talk about peace and love around a table with cups of chocolate. The structure of this research will be given by the conceptualization of livelihoods as a multidimensional fact closely related to sustainability, focused on the search for improvements in the living conditions of households, exploring fields of sociology, geography, ecology and multiple disciplinary aspects, requiring a multidisciplinary analysis. This is the case of cocoa agroforestry systems as livelihoods of peasant family agriculture, due to abrupt changes in the study area since the eighties with oil exploration and the derivation of the armed conflict, the relegation of agricultural activities to a level of less importance than mining, generating the increase of crops for illicit use which has an inversely proportional relationship with crops such as cocoa, banana, cassava, among others; The study will be carried out from the perspective of the livelihoods approach where the assets or capitals (natural, physical, human, financial and social), which together determine the life achieved by the cocoa producing peasant families in the region of El Troncal, will be addressed. The information will be collected through the Participatory Rural Development - PRA tool, such as the semi-structured dialogue with each key stakeholder, and in a second view, a characterization sheet will be applied to each key stakeholder. Keywords: sustainable livelihoods, agroforestry systems, peasant family farming.
